Raavan done !
Cinematography= Top Notch !
Locales = Amazing ! – That India has more to offer than the amazons, Sri Lanka and Indo China – proven – period !
But for those who haven’t savoured National Geographic, Discovery or our vey own Surabhi and other find our India programs, do see the lush and vibrant countryside as you may have never imagined. Mani had shown great mountain slopes in flashes in Thiruda Thiruda and Uyire (Dil se in Hindi) and goes full steam here with Santhosh Sivan and Manikandan in Unison and efforts show. The camera work is amazing and those who have seen Kannathil Muthamittal would see Mani Sir going beyond any of his movies before.
That said, there is isn’t much to write about ......
I know people have liked it
– maybe I am a bit uninitiated...
But then I came back mighty disappointed.
Story = ? neo Ramayan meets Mani !!!!
Era = Unknown- alternates between the 70’s and the 90’s – didn’t see the cell phone being used a lot ! forget the existence of a sat phone or GPS..
Concept & Packaging = Apocalypse Now + Apocalypto + Crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon + House of flying daggers + Temple of doom + Thiruda Thiruda + trace elements of Chaos theory& Stockholm syndrome – Sorry but the references to the Thakurs, Corrupt Thanedaars of 70’s are too clichéd to find mention.
Acting = Snarl, Brawl and caring two hoots for the sane not to miss - lots of climbing, falling, running, helping to fall, climb and inspiring to shout. Vikram in the worst performance of his life – may be he signed and acted prior to Sethu in this film. What a colossal waste of such powerhouse of a talent .
Inspiration = The joker, Veerappan ..... ha ha ha
Mani changes the phrase – “The rain in Spain, stays mainly in the plains”
from now on – read this as “ The rain is Pain and stays always away from the sane”
